The existence of atoms was proposed since 400 B.C. approximately. According to the early Indian and Greek philosophers atoms are the fundamental particle of matter. ‘Atom’ is derived from the Greek word a-tomio which means not divisible further. In 1808 the atomic theory was propounded by John Dalton, which described the law of conservation of mass, the law of multiple proportions and the law of constant composition very well but failed to explain some points.
